Carbios-Wankai PET Biorecycling Plant in China Delayed to H1 2028

21 Sep 2026 -Carbios and Wankai New Materials have postponed the expected commissioning of their planned PET biorecycling plant in Haining, Zhejiang Province, China, to the first half of 2028.

The companies said the project is continuing to progress, with preparatory work for construction coordination underway and locally available PET waste streams being validated.

However, Carbios said additional technical work is required to adapt its enzymatic biorecycling process to the specific characteristics of the site. As a result, commissioning of the plant has been postponed to H1 2028.

The facility is planned with a processing capacity of 50,000 tonnes of PET waste per year and is intended to be China’s first PET biorecycling plant using Carbios’ enzymatic technology.

The project is a key step in the planned deployment of Carbios’ PET biorecycling technology in Asia.

As a result of the revised project timeline, Carbios and Wankai have also agreed to postpone Wankai’s planned €5 million subscription to a dedicated capital increase in Carbios. The investment, originally expected in the first half of 2026, is now expected to take place by 31 December 2026, subject to the applicable conditions.

Carbios reported a cash position of €59 million at the end of 2025, including its subsidiaries, which it said provides sufficient financial visibility to cover operating expenses beyond the next 12 months.
