Fonterra launches new sustainability strategy with its farmers

New Zealand’s dairy co-operative, Fonterra has launched a new initiative with its farmer suppliers called “The Co-operative Difference” as part of a new sustainability strategy.

Fonterra said that the initiative will recognise farmers who go beyond the miniumum requirements to supply high-quality milk in a more sustainable way, help other farmers follow good practices by providing more information and industry-leading support sevices, streamlining reporting and auditing process, in its bid to protect its market position, strengthen its sustainability claims and drive product demand by increasingly sophisticated consumers who demand more information about the environmental impact of the products they purchase.

“Sustainability for the co-op was more than the environment. It’s about looking after our people, caring for animals, adapting to changing customer and consumer expectations and respecting the communities and land where we live and work.” Said Mike Cronin, Managing Director of Co-operative Affairs are Fonterra.
