LyondellBasell, Mondelez and Amcor Collaborate on 75% Recycled Flexible Packaging for Marab
ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, July 07, 2026–LyondellBasell (LYB), Mondelez International, Amcor and Taghleef Industries have joined forces to introduce a new flexible packaging solution for Marabou chocolate that incorporates 75% recycled plastic sourced from post-consumer waste through advanced recycling.
The new wrapper combines LYB’s CirculenRevive polymers, Taghleef Industries’ biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) film and Amcor’s flexible packaging expertise to deliver packaging that meets the demanding performance and food safety requirements expected for confectionery applications.
“Our collaboration with Mondelez illustrates our shared vision for the future and highlights our ability to provide innovative, high-quality circular solutions tailored to demanding specifications,” said Yvonne van der Laan, executive vice president, Sustainable Solutions and Technology Business, LYB.
The recycled polymer is produced through advanced recycling using pyrolysis oil derived from post-consumer mixed plastic waste as feedstock. Using an ISCC PLUS-certified mass balance approach, the process enables recycled feedstock to be attributed to virgin-quality polymers suitable for food-contact packaging while maintaining the performance characteristics required for flexible packaging.
As LYB continues to expand its circular solutions, the company plans to supply future polymers for Marabou packaging through MoReTec-1, its first commercial-scale catalytic chemical recycling plant under construction in Wesseling, Germany. Once operational, the MoReTec-1 facility is designed to produce 50,000 metric tons of feedstock annually for use in existing LYB production units, enabling the production of recycled polymers. Source One Plastics, an LYB joint venture located in Eicklingen, Germany, processes mixed plastic waste into feedstock suitable for chemical recycling, supporting future supply to MoReTec-1. LYB currently sources recycled feedstock for CirculenRevive polymer production from third-party pyrolysis oil producers.
“Looking ahead, our ambition is to increase the use of recycled plastic in our packaging materials, and we’re proud to collaborate with multiple value chain players, including LYB and other industry leaders, on this journey,” said Packaging Sustainability Manager at Mondelez International, Richard Akkermans.
Why it matters
The Marabou project demonstrates how chemically recycled plastics are moving beyond pilot projects into commercial food packaging applications. By combining advanced recycling, certified circular polymers and collaboration across the packaging value chain, the initiative illustrates how recycled-content flexible packaging can meet stringent food-contact and performance requirements while supporting circular economy goals.
